OUR VALUES

We believe that coffee lovers should be able to drink their daily brew without worrying that their consumption is contributing to rainforest deforestation and the destruction of wildlife habitats. There are many environmental and ecological problems that result from mainstream, exploitative, monoculture coffee production. One of the saddest results of exploitative coffee production is the destruction of the natural habitat of wild animals, particularly birds.

At Finca La Palmera, we grow ecologically sustainable, shade grown, small scale, single origin coffee. Our third generation family farm in the Colombian Andes is committed to providing environmentally conscious customers with an excellent alternative to buying coffee grown on deforested land using harsh chemicals. We believe so strongly in our duty to protect our natural environment, we have created a Bird Amigo certification process so that consumers can immediately recognize coffee beans that have been grown in a biodiverse environment without pesticides. Colombia is home to the world’s greatest biodiversity of birds and we are 100% committed to protecting them.

Approximately 200,000 acres of rainforest are cleared every day for industrial and agricultural purposes worldwide. This is unacceptable. Coffee is supposedly most “efficiently” grown under full sun monoculture conditions, but we don’t see it that way. In that language “efficiently” means making money, not what is most “efficient” for our planet, our health, or our communities, our true wealth. People are going to keep drinking coffee – it is the second most popular beverage in the world after water! And we believe people would rather drink coffee that does not contribute to deforestation, pollution, and the destruction of the natural habitat of a myriad of wildlife in Colombia. We are 100% committed to offering them a sustainable alternative.

10% of all profits made from Bird Amigo products goes directly towards helping protect the natural biodiversity of the region. Our beans are excellent because of the richness of the land they are grown in so we are all about reinvesting our profits back into the land and the natural environment!
